The First Day of Lent commonly called Ash Wednesday (Violet) Major Feast
Wednesday, February 14th, 2018
Morning Prayer: Invit 4; Ps 6, 143; Is 57:15–end; Mk 2:13–22; Coll 138
Holy Eucharist: Propers 138; Int 57:1–7 (omitted if Penitential Office precedes); Tract 103:8–14; no Creed or Gloria
Evening Prayer: Ps 102; Is 58; Heb 3:12–4:13; Coll 138
The BCP Penitential Service (p. 611) may be used today at any of the liturgies. It does not contain a rite of imposition of ashes. If such a rite is desired and pastorally appropriate, the ashes could be imposed following Ps 51 (p. 612). See note above regarding the preparation of ashes. The canticle Benedicite, p. 26, is a suitable replacement for Te Deum at MP in Lent. Collect 138 is to be read every day in Lent after the Collect appointed for the day until Holy Week (rubric, p. 139). See note p. xlix regarding the use of psalms at the Eucharist: In Lent, Alleluia is omitted and this version of the Gradual is called a Tract. The Forty Days of Lent are observed as Days of Abstinence. The commemoration of [Valentine, Bishop and Martyr] may be observed 15 February.
